An armed man tried to force his way through a secured checkpoint at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner gala, leading to a violent confrontation with Secret Service agents just minutes after the president arrived.
Federal authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. Officials confirmed he carried a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives when he rushed the security perimeter inside the venue lobby.
Secret Service agents quickly intercepted Allen before he could reach the crowded ballroom where guests had gathered. A violent struggle ensued, during which gunfire erupted and one agent was struck at close range.
