Secret Service agents thwarted an armed gunman attempting to breach a crowded annual gathering at a Washington Hilton hotel on Tuesday evening.
Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from California, rushed the security checkpoint carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.
During the ensuing shootout in the lobby, one Secret Service agent was shot at close range but survived thanks to a protective vest.
