MANAMA, Bahrain — The U.S. Navy has officially concluded an intensive, four-day search-and-rescue mission in the Arabian Sea for Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, after combined naval and air assets scoured more than 14,000 square nautical miles of open water without locating the fallen aviator.

Fleet leadership suspended active search operations on July 5 following 102 continuous hours of systematic sweeps across a maritime grid roughly the size of the state of Maryland. The high-tempo effort drew upon combatants from two carrier strike groups, shore-based maritime patrol aircraft, and joint Air Force reconnaissance assets.

Cmdr. Edwards was the sole crew member unaccounted for after his MH-60S Sea Hawk multi-mission helicopter made an uncommanded emergency water landing in the central Arabian Sea on July 1. Three additional aircrew aboard the aircraft were successfully pulled from the water by immediate-response search-and-rescue units minutes after the ditching; all three were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and have since stabilized.
