The Colorado Supreme Court unanimously blocked three proposed ballot measures that sought to temporarily suspend the state’s independent redistricting commission. Backed by a group called Coloradans for a Level Playing Field, the initiatives aimed to allow voters to approve a brand new congressional map ahead of the upcoming 2028 and 2030 election cycles.
Supporters of the proposed changes argued that altering the system was necessary to effectively redraw district lines. Meanwhile, fierce opponents contended that the measures would drastically undermine the existing, voter-approved process that was originally established to keep mapmaking independent and fair across the state of Colorado.
In three distinct opinions, the state supreme court ruled that each of the proposed measures violated Colorado’s strict constitutional single-subject requirement. Because of these distinct legal violations, the initiatives were completely prevented from moving forward onto the upcoming November ballot for voters to consider.
