The U.S. Navy officially ended an expansive search-and-rescue mission in the Arabian Sea on July 5 after an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter executed an uncommanded emergency water landing. The extensive operation covered thousands of square miles of open ocean over 102 continuous hours without locating the missing veteran naval aviator.

Fleet leadership formally suspended active operations when aircrews and surface warships combed roughly 14,000 square miles of water. Two days after halting the active search, military officials officially identified the fallen officer as Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, who served as the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5.

Edwards was widely recognized across the fleet as a highly experienced naval aviator with an extensive operational flight record. Following the tragic maritime incident, defense officials confirmed that Edwards was posthumously advanced to the rank of captain in honor of his dedicated service.
