President Donald Trump issued one of his broadest economic warnings yet Wednesday, dramatically escalating the administration’s pressure campaign against Iran and threatening consequences for countries that help Tehran evade American restrictions.
Trump announced what he described as an “Economic D-Day” against Iran, promising an unprecedented effort to isolate the country financially while warning governments and businesses around the world against providing Tehran with an economic lifeline. “Today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale,” he added.
Trump made clear that the campaign would extend beyond Iran itself, warning that countries allowing their financial institutions, businesses, airports or government entities to assist Tehran could face economic retaliation from the United States. “I am also announcing that ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences,” Trump said.
